Day 108: The Value of Words and TechnoTutor

So we all speak words, since the first day we are born we hear people speaking words and as we grow our ability to communicate and understand the words we have heard grows. But do we actually know what we are talking about? Well one look at the world would suggest we don’t know what we are talking about, I mean the problem with our education is that throughout our lives we scarcely truly understand the importance of vocabulary and what these words mean in direct dictionary fact, there is no work being done on directing our natural learning ability.

The words we know derive every action we make because our ability to comprehend and be successful in anything in life is dependent on how well developed our vocabulary is. At TechnoTutor we say that before we begin studying a particular topic it is crucial that our brick wall is mastered in this subject that our foundation is solid.

For example if I pick up a book on the mechanics of a car engine, it would be of no use for me to sit down and start reading the book until I have compiled word lists of the vocabulary needed to understand the subject and then integrated these words into my physical body, stored for quick and easy recall. Then I will have a solid brick wall and I will not hit any “road bumps” within reading the book on car mechanics in any situation.

The education system that we have all been brought up in suggests that the natural learning ability is not truly understood because we are not being shown how to effectively direct our education. In a society where it is believed that our thoughts, feelings, emotions, life memories and opinions have huge value in everything that we do. However it is a provable fact that this focus on assuming what words mean according to how we feel and what our opinion is of a word completely compromises our education and general ability to understand anything in the world which will inevitably compromise any number of situations we find ourselves in whether it be a social gathering, a job interview, meeting new people, raising children and any other number of situations.

Let me give you an example when I was 17 I decided to switch my college course from drama to media studies because I thought I knew more about media then drama. However as soon as I changed course I was being hit with words that I didn’t know the meaning of immediately, I remember being asked in the class what the word narrative meant. I really had no idea at the time at all and I experienced a lot of embarrassment in the moment, I took a guess and was wrong. Anyway after that I decided to push as much books on media into my head as possible, stressing and straining with difficulty in a constant state of concrete learning. Like many of my friends at college I didn’t start trying to cram these books into my head until a few weeks before the exam, then when I got to the exams at the end of the course I got a C, but you know what, here in this moment I cannot remember hardly any of the subject matter I was being tested on lol.

So what does that tell me? It tells me the problem was that the vocabulary was not being effectively stored into my long term memory, I have no abstract memory, I was not accelerating my natural learning ability and if I were to repeat the exam now with the same flawed study methods of trying to “cram the book in my head” then the same thing would happen again, but I would probably get worse then a C grade because I accumulated a more contaminated brick wall for the years after this exam.

I became less and less interested in education after college was over, as my understanding of its importance continued to diminish further throughout my teenage years and I could remember nothing! Why go to college for 2 years if I come out at the end not remembering what I have “learnt”?

However through changing my starting point with education and utilizing the tools that we offer at TechnoTutor  like the vocabulary builder I know now that there is a way to enjoy education where the learning happens quicker and stores into long term memory, and then it becomes easy and very fun to learn new things. So If I was tested on the same media material now, I am 100% certain with complete clarity that I would get a much better grade then a C, because thinking, feeling and emotions where I assume things and create holes in my brick wall does not come into my learning now, only what I measurably know is proven to me every time I use TechnoTutor to learn something.

I start slow and I drive up the levels until I have reached my maximum capacity, it’s like accelerating through the gears in a car and every driver knows that going into top gear on the motorway is an enjoyable experience, knowing that we are moving at our highest possible potential, which in turn allows us to successfully get to our destination as soon as possible. If I was stuck in first gear on the motorway it would not be effective, it would take me a long, long, long time to get to my destination and of course this would make me tired and disinterested because its taking so long and I would be getting in everyone’s way, literally a danger to myself and others in the world, being an ineffective member of society due to not educating myself in the best way possible.

The sooner we realize that the problems in the world are a consequence of our education being misaligned, and the sooner we take action to change our education using the time tested tools that are far more effective than the current education system, then the sooner this world will change for the better.

There is so much to discuss here so I will continue in future posts.
